First Blog Entry-Ever! (Tech Task #1)
So, here is my first blog entry! This is my first time creating a blog, and I am looking forward to the process of blogging! I am an avid blog reader and love my Google Reader, with all my favorite blogs in one place, so, now, it will fun exploring blogs from the other side.
I am a pre-service teacher in the Elementary Education (PreK-3) program at the University of Regina. I have been attending the University, part time and full time, since 2005, and I am currently and have previously worked in the preschool setting.
My post-secondary educational background is focused in Early Childhood Education. I have completed three post-secondary programs in Early Childhood Education, and in the fall, I will be entering the third year of the elementary education program (PreK-3) at the University of Regina.
I am an avid user of computer technology in my personal life. I like to browse the Internet: finding new websites and perusing favourite websites; I use email and Facebook to connect and communicate, and I like to read a variety of news and blog sources. I, also, enjoy viewing short videos.
I have only recently been exposed to some ways to use technology in the classroom through teacher blogs, and during this class I hope to learn even more ways to effectively use technology in the classroom- with a variety of ages.
I think technology provides some important tools for students to connect with other people around the world, display their learning, and provide more tools to understand learning concepts. Last semester, I participated in a project in ELNG 325-Teaching Writing, which connected pre-service teachers to grade one students and their blogs. This partnership provided pre-service teachers hands-on experiences teaching writing as well as providing young students a wider audience to encourage the practice and improvement of their writing. I think technology can be used to aid learning as well as document learning, so there are many possibilities, and I look forward to learning more of those possibilities in this class.
I think some of the limitations with the use of technology would be the cost of the tools and the sedentary aspect. Some students and schools can afford the technological tools and will have more exposure and experience, while others won’t have those opportunities- creating a disadvantage. Also, I think using technology creates a more sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to obesity and health problems. I think the use of technology should be balanced with physical activity.
In this class, I would like to learn ways to incorporate technology into the classroom as a way to connect to others around the world, document learning, and aid the learning process. I would like to learn about a variety and number of examples of technological uses in current classrooms.

Hi Corinne! I’m glad you pointed out the sedentary aspect of computer use. Obesity is becoming such a problem in our society and it is definitely important to teach children balance. But I wanted to point out that technology can also be a part of physical activity. A popular example might be the Wii game system, but devices such as heart monitors and pedometers are also gaining popularity to help motivate and assess student physical activity. Technology is also doing wonders to help students with physical disabilities get active. Technology opens up so many opportunities, and I agree with you that a lack of funding is a huge barrier preventing many schools from having these benefits.
Thanks for your thoughts here, Corrine. It’s great that you have some experience now, and can also see some of the drawbacks … esp. to the sedentary pieces. The point addressed in the above comment re: the Wii has merit, but there has also been criticism around the types of activities the Wii promotes (related to repetitive stress syndrome, for instance).
Thanks for your post, hope to hear from you soon.
