Learning In Class & With Blogs
I was reading Darren Kuropatwa’s blog and found an interesting series of posts called Student Voices. Student Voices are interviews he conducts with his students, and the students describe specific experiences in their education and learning. Right now, I believe he has two posts under Student Voices, and I was really interested in one of them called, Student Voices Episode 1: Jessie.
Darren interviews a high school student named Jessie, and she discusses how she learns best in math during classroom instruction and using the class blog. I was really interested to hear her experiences and reflect on my own experiences learning.
I have had success learning in similar ways she has described such as when the teacher/professor reviews the topic from the previous assignment, and questions can be asked if the concepts are not clear. Additionally, she describes working together in groups: asking for help, helping others, and sharing ideas also benefited her learning. Group learning has also been helpful to me, in small and large groups, but I also remember groups not working well, so it depends on the ability of the group to function effectively. I would be interested to hear more about Darren’s experiences with group work and how he manages or facilitates the group work in his classes.
In the interview, Jessie also talks about learning from other student’s scribes, which are part of the class blog. What I understand of scribes is: they are written or drawn posts, which explain what was learned in class on a particular day, and in Darren’s class, the student’s take turns completing a scribe. What a great way to assess comprehension as well as provide classmates with a review of what was learned!
I really enjoyed reading and listening to Darren’s post. It was great to hear what assisted some student’s learning, and it was interesting to hear how teachers use their blogs, and ways blogs help student’s learn.

Yes, you have described the scribe idea well. Darren is a master of this approach, and there are some really neat scribe posts that were completed by his students. If you click on any of Darren’s classroom blogs (listed on the bottom side of Darren’s main blog), you will see scribe posts. I believe Darren also keeps track of the exemplar scribe posts as well.
Thanks for your thoughts on his blog.
Cheers.
